El Gusto Del Pueblo

In 1998 Gildario & Maria Lopez purchased the old Rex Cafe and transformed it into a successful Mexican restaurant that is rated five stars by Texas Monthly magazine.

For authentic Mexican cousin served up fresh and tasty in friendly atmosphere, it’s time you discovered El Gusto Del Pueblo, the gem of Mexican restaurants! El Gusto Del Pueblo’s menu offers diners of a wide variety of Mexican dishes based on traditional recipes from Veracruz, Puebla and Yucatan, as well as Monterey, the birth place, Gildario “Ruben” Lopez, who along with his wife Maria owns and operates El Gusto Del Pueblo.

Open 7 days a week, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. El Gusto Del Pueblo serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The complete menu is available all day and special request will be taken for any dish.

The basis for any Mexican restaurant is it’s salsa. El Gusto Del Pueblo makes it’s own outstanding salsa. The homemade salsa is created from three different kinds of peppers, including fresh jalapenos, habaneros and chili de arbol.  The salsa and fresh chips are served with every meal.

El Gusto Del Pueblo makes it’s own flour tortillas and serves homemade tamales.

Popular breakfast items at the restaurant include Huevos Rancheros, which are served with potatoes, bacon and topped with Ranchero sauce, porkchops and eggs.

El Gusto Del Pueblo’s breakfast burritos were voted the “Best in Galveston County” by Galveston County Daily News.

For lunch and dinner customers often choose the Rio Grande burrito, a 12 inch burrito filled with choice of meat, either pork, chicken or beef and served with cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, rice and beans.

Gorditas are also a popular dish at El Gusto Del Pueblo. These corn tortilla pockets are filled with choice of meat, including pork, shredded chicken, fajita beef, shrimp, shredded beef, fajita chicken or ground beef. Gorditas are sold individually or as a plate with rice and beans.

Also available are tortas. These Mexican sandwiches served on French bread filled are with beans, choice of meat, lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese and choice of mustard, mayonnaise or sour cream.

With all the delicious selections on the menu, El Gusto Del Pueblo is best known for it’s outstanding seafood dishes. Using fresh island seafood, the chef at El Gusto Del Pueblo creates a wide variety of dishes. Including ceviche, which is lemon cooked salmon served on a bed of lettuce and topped with pico de gallo and hot sauce. Vuelve a la Vida, a seafood mixture served with cocktail sauce, fried seafood plate, mojarra frita (fried perch).
 

El Gusto Del Pueblo offers a daily special for $8.25, which includes iced tea. Traditional Mexican plates are available everyday, including Menudo, Lengua En Salsa and Barbacoa by the pound available.

Tamales also can be ordered in any number and can be made to your own taste. El Gusto Del Pueblo also offers vegetarian tamales, which must be ordered one week in advance.

Dessert at El Gusto Del Pueblo includes homemade sopapillas. The restaurant offers signature Margaritas, hurricane mixed drinks as well as Mexican brand beers, including Corona, DOS Equis, Bohemia and more. Margaritas are made with Agave Especial wine from Mexico.

Anything on the menu at El Gusto Del Pueblo is available for catering.

In addition to food the restaurant has a Mariachi it contracts for special occasions. Call the restaurant at 409 763-0410 for more information. The band must be scheduled two weeks in advance. Delivery is also available on the island with a minimum $15 dollar purchase.
